It’s time to stop settling and start creating: your new life is waiting.

You loved working as a medical writer, whether directly or indirectly. But you didn’t love the constant criticism, high demands, and micromanagement. It was time for a change.

You decided to go freelance, despite many people around you being unsupportive.

You sought out free and low-cost resources to support your efforts. You reached out to existing contacts to get some starter projects. You started looking for opportunities everywhere.

But, after a few months of giving it your all, you’re not seeing results.

The companies you worked for always did the business development—that wasn’t the medical writers’ job.

Everything was a one-sided relationship—you didn’t see the sales, the negotiations, the deals put on the table (or taken off it).

You were surrounded by people who only ever expected more of you. No matter your workload or output, it was never enough.

How are you supposed to create a work-life balance when you’re used to being pushed around, playing a role, and hiding parts of yourself?

Your psychological blocks are evident:

1️⃣ You want to explore new types of writing, but you’re afraid of being criticized (because your employer did this often).

2️⃣ You want to attract new clients, but you’re afraid of showing your full self in public (because it makes you vulnerable).

3️⃣ You want to take on a few large projects at a time and be well-compensated, but you don’t feel confident ‘selling yourself’ yet.

4️⃣ You want to build mutually beneficial relationships and meet clients’ needs, but you aren’t sure who exactly your ideal clients are.

5️⃣ You want to develop self-leadership skills, but you struggle to ask for help and your enthusiasm can lead to overcommitment and burnout.

Here’s the thing:

• You’re very self-aware.

• You know what you want.

• You’re ready to raise your standards.

• You’re not afraid of putting in the work.

• Your background is more than sufficient.

Regardless of this potential, you can’t build a thriving business with the same patterns that burned you out in the first place. You need a space where you can unlearn those dynamics while stepping into the new, empowered version of yourself.

Specifically, you need to work closely with someone who knows the industry like the back of their hand, will challenge you to grow in alignment with your own values, and has already created an infrastructure in which you can thrive.

That’s why The ‘Thriving & Free’ Medical Writer Program™ exists.

It’s been seven years since I became a freelance medical writing coach, and if there’s one thing I’ve changed about my approach to supporting aspiring writers it’s this:

“I stopped telling them what to do and started listening to what they wanted.” – Sophie Ash

Everyone has two voices in their head in any given moment: the one that says what they think the other person wants to hear (often by default) and the one that says what they really think (much quieter).

As the years go by, the longer someone is only accepted into society by playing the games, following the rules, and sucking up to the right people, the quieter their authentic inner voice becomes. As a coach, it’s my job to know the difference; then, to quieten the first voice and amplify the second.

There are several core principles that can be applied to these situations. So keep reading if you’re ready to call in your dream life right now.

It’s not a sexy solution. But the true antidote to burnout, self-doubt, and self-sabotage is in healing the relationship we have with work and with ourselves. This means:

• Letting go of limiting beliefs and replacing them with new (helpful) ones.

• Challenging ourselves to get out of our comfort zone and grow in new ways.

• Learning to love and accept all parts of ourselves, even when there’s resistance.

• Finding ways to grow our business that are truly authentic, for maximum sustainability and long-term fulfillment.

• Working on our inner selves (confidence, self-worth, internal validation) just as much as our outer selves (how we come across to others).

Only when we can thoroughly and consistently address these things can we call in our dream, freedom-focused lifestyle (and keep it, and enjoy it).

And—trust me—I’ve tried doing all of this alone. It’s slow. It’s cumbersome. It’s difficult. Sometimes I’d get results. Sometimes I didn’t. But one thing’s for sure: I learned the hard way.

As entrepreneurs, we all have to take risks. Go against the odds. Fend for ourselves. But that doesn’t mean we have to make things more difficult for ourselves than they have to be.

The times when my business has generated the most profits haven’t been the times I’ve pushed myself the hardest: they’ve been the times when I’ve allowed myself to be fully present, to enjoy the journey, and to trust that everything’s going to work out the way it’s supposed to.

That doesn’t mean taking your eye off the ball. Or getting lazy. Or giving up. It means learning and practicing true self-leadership so that nothing and no one can stop you from having everything you desire.

It’s getting straight back on the horse when you fall off. It’s learning how to express yourself during times of frustration, and knowing who you can trust to do that with. It’s giving yourself permission to be exactly who you are, all the time, with no excuses or compromises.

If you resonate with the principles shared in this article, I highly encourage you to submit an application to The ‘Thriving & Free’ Medical Writer Program™. Only a handful of spaces open each year, and I only extend offers to those I believe are truly ready to raise their standards and succeed. This could be your moment to shine!

FYI: We don’t select people based on credentials, years of experience, or whether they’ve run a business before. What matters most is your potential, willingness to grow, and commitment to creating a freedom-focused life.
