How Natasha built her writing business and landed her first client in 12 hours.
Last year, Natasha was on the brink of giving up on having a medical writing career.
She had spent 10 months trying to break in “the traditional way”—applying for jobs, volunteering with AMWA, attending networking events, and setting up informational interviews.
“I was ready to accept defeat,” she told me. “I was just about done. I’d submitted a million different applications. I was meeting with all these people, hoping someone could refer me or get me in somewhere… and literally none of it was working.”
At every networking event, she found herself repeating the same line: “I’m a scientist, but I would like to be a writer one day.”
She sounded like a broken record.
In July 2024, at an AMWA event she had helped organize, Natasha happened to sit next to three people who were discussing their freelance careers. She couldn’t help but overhear that they had all jumped into medical writing without any formal writing experience.
“It was like… really? Are you sure that’s how that works?” she recalled. “I’d heard it a few times before, but this was the first time I was meeting multiple people at once who were actually doing it. I think that’s what pushed me over the edge, from curiosity into action.”
After the event, Natasha followed up with the writers she’d met to learn more about their experiences. To her pleasant surprise, they all told her the same thing: Prospology gave them the structure, preparation, and support they needed to go out and do it on their own.
“In that moment, I wasn’t really anxious about whether I’d succeed. I just needed to feel prepared. I didn’t want to pitch myself if my samples weren’t polished or my website wasn’t ready. I didn’t want to feel like I’d be taken advantage of because I seemed green.”
As soon as Natasha started researching Prospology, she knew it was a great fit.
“I didn’t even get in my head about it. I just said, I’m going to do this. My husband was like, ‘Okay, she’s going to make it happen.’”
She joined The ‘Thriving & Free’ Medical Writer Program™ in July 2024.
Up until that point, Natasha always saw freelance medical writing as her “end goal.” People close to her couldn’t understand why she wasn’t building a business of her own. But it felt so far out of reach.
“My husband is an entrepreneur, my parents are entrepreneurs, and my best friend is a serial entrepreneur,” Natasha shared. “So, I’ve always had it ingrained in me to be my own boss. My dad has always told me not to be a sucker and to work for myself!”
Natasha assumed she’d need tons of full-time medical writing experience under her belt to get started as a freelancer. But that perspective soon changed when she discovered Prospology, describing it as “a total mindset shift.”
“Now that I know I don’t have to wait 10 years, I want to start now!” she said, during our discovery call.
I saw so much potential in Natasha that I offered her a spot in my signature business coaching program right away. “This is definitely a shift in gears for me,” she said.
“Looking back, I saw no reason to wait,” said Natasha. “Prospology’s offer to help me take control of my career and future was an opportunity I couldn’t refuse.”
I couldn’t wait to help Natasha build her very own freedom-focused lifestyle!
Natasha had been writing creatively for many years as an adult and had done a lot of music media coverage. But at the time she enrolled in The ‘Thriving & Free’ Medical Writer Program™, she wasn’t doing much writing at all.
Any residual fear that she wasn’t capable of succeeding as a freelancer was soon eradicated once Natasha started exploring all of the 350+ industry-specific trainings that Prospology has to offer and working through the Assignments.
Extremely ambitious and focused, she quickly got to work fleshing out a future vision for her freelance medical writing business.
“My ideal work-life scenario would see me working 30–40 hours per week, fully remote, to make around $150–200K.”
She imagined a rhythm of “3 long full-focus days and then 2–3 shorter workdays,” with the freedom to travel or move and take her work with her.
Even early on in her journey, she was fiercely self-aware and determined.
“I want to start working with clients soon. I know there’s a lot I need to learn,” she said. “I’m probably much younger than many of your former students, and I’m still early in my career. But I’m very well prepared for that.”
Natasha’s confidence continued to build the more she engaged with the program and the other students in The Prospologers Community.
“After completing the ‘Imposter Syndrome’ course, I feel my concerns have been well-addressed,” she said. “I have a strong background in science and medicine, and I have excellent writing skills that I can utilize in my business.”
The more Natasha began to see her unique value—not just as a capable writer, but as someone who can bring real perspective and personality to the medical writing field—the more progress she saw in laying a strong foundation for her company.
By mid-September, her personal brand was already starting to flourish.
“I’m really starting to appreciate the value of this,” she reflected. “Everyone may express it differently, but we’re all essentially saying the same thing. What sets me apart isn’t the fact that I do scientific communication—many people do that. It’s the personal aspects of our brands that truly differentiate us.”
Natasha particularly appreciated how her time at Prospology taught her that the way she views her own business isn’t necessarily the same as how others (i.e., prospective clients) do.
“It’s so much easier for someone else to look at you and tell you what strikes them,” she said. “When I’m talking about myself, everything is important because I’ve experienced it. Sometimes, you need an objective eye to tell you how your story and offering comes across to other people.”
She had three one-week trips planned before enrolling, which the program fit around seamlessly, since it’s all done virtually. Each time she returned fully refreshed, with a newfound perspective to bring to her brand.
She actively sought my feedback on all aspects of her business development, and often turned to fellow Prospologers for input on key decisions like finalizing her company name, visual branding, and website development.
Natasha also enthusiastically attended many of our exclusive Pop-Up Events on a variety of topics, from tips on advisory board meeting report development, to tapping into her creative powers, to exploring professional logo design.
Fast forward to April, 2025, Natasha was gearing up for an official launch. With just a few finishing touches left and a handful of skills to refine, she was well on her way to making her entrepreneurial dreams come true.
“My website is DONE!” she shared with fellow Prospologers. “It felt so good to finish the first draft, but the transformation to the final version is insane 😭. I loved the process of building it out and learned SO much about visuals and graphic design.”
In early May, before Natasha had even graduated, she got a message on LinkedIn from a biotech consulting group looking for a regulatory writer. Since she’d already been trained on how to handle this situation, she scheduled a call with them for the next day.
It turned out, the prospective client was a CRO who needed someone to amend a clinical study protocol for an oncology drug, starting the following week.
“Since it’s just amendments, I should be able to handle it,” she said. “I haven’t technically written a clinical protocol myself before, but I’ve read them. So this should be good exposure, rather than starting from scratch on my own.”
They agreed on a starting rate of $125/hour, which Natasha was very happy with.
A few minutes after the call, the company’s CEO connected with Natasha on LinkedIn. Shortly after, I received this message:
“Contract is signed! Does that mean I officially have my first client?!”
We all celebrated in the ‘Share Your Wins’ section of The Prospologers Community.
“I’m honestly screaming/crying/throwing up—this happened so fast, and somehow I think I just landed my first client in 12 hours,” she said. “So thankful to have this community 🫶🏼🫶🏼.”
Let’s not forget, Natasha accomplished all of this without compromising on her personal mission to visit four new countries every year. What a star.
Here’s what she had to say about her overall experience at Prospology:
“Last year, I was stuck in a rut. I dreamed of doing medical writing, but after months of trying to break into the field the “traditional way” – aka submitting applications and getting ghosted by recruiters – I was ready to accept defeat. Then, I discovered Prospology and it changed the entire trajectory of my career.
Sophie taught me that I don’t need to beg for anyone’s approval; that I’m in control of my own destiny. I desperately needed more freedom, and she inspired a complete transformation in my mindset by showing me how to prioritize my goals and dreams.
Despite starting with no marketing experience, Sophie’s guidance helped me create a compelling, branded business package. Prospology’s concentrated curriculum equipped me with the knowledge to launch and run my company with confidence, saving me years of potential mistakes as a new entrepreneur.
Truly, Sophie is exceptional. She designed the Prospology program to maximize your potential. Piece by piece, she builds your confidence in yourself, and then in your business. Her unwavering commitment to your success ensures you feel seen, heard, and supported every step of the way.
If you’ve considered freelance medical writing and are ready to jump into entrepreneurship, Sophie will equip you with everything you need to build your brand. Beyond that, her profound intuition, kindness, and mentorship will empower you to flourish.”
In her final week of The ‘Thriving & Free’ Medical Writer Program™, I asked Natasha how she’d describe Prospology to someone who’s never heard of it before.
“It’s basically like online school,” she said. “I thought it was going to be more like general meetings, but it’s a whole platform. And the sheer amount of work? I wasn’t expecting that. When I logged in for the first time, I was like ‘whoah—this is a lot!’”
Natasha shared that once she found a good rhythm, she began approaching the program like a class she genuinely wanted to finish. “That made it easier to move through it,” she said.
Natasha had been considering the University of Chicago’s medical writing certificate program for a long time. It had always been in the back of her mind as something she might do “one day.” But, after joining Prospology’s Community, her perspective shifted completely.
“I’m very glad I did this instead,” she said. “The UChicago program is expensive, and I wasn’t sure if it would actually help me get a job. It might build credibility, but Prospology gave me something better—a whole package; something beautiful and tangible that I built for myself.”
In her view, Prospology was a much better investment than returning to academia because she could see the immediate value.
“I don’t think I’ll ever have to do UChicago’s program,” Natasha added. “Maybe one day if I’m bored and want to brush up on technical skills. But it’s a big investment for what is literally just a piece of paper. I’d never get another Master’s degree either, for the same reason. If I’m not going to get my money’s worth, why do it?”
I asked Natasha what she feels makes Prospology’s business coaching program stand out from other options out there (1:1 coaching, doing it yourself, buying online courses, etc).
“You’re really particular about who you let in to The Prospologers Community,” she said. “Everyone’s inclined to participate. It’s give and take. If I help someone, I know they’ll help me back.”
“Other programs—especially school or typical online courses—don’t encourage real interaction. In most cases, you don’t need to engage with anyone. But at Prospology, it’s different.”
“This positioned me to not only learn how to network effectively, but also to want to do it. I’ve got a whole group of people who are like-minded, and I know I can go to them with questions, even after I graduate. Maybe, if you’re lucky in other programs, you get one person you can message. Here, I have twenty. And they respond quickly.”
Natasha also provided feedback on the structural elements of our signature program, and how it differs from everything else out there.
“All the lessons are very thorough, and the sections are organized really well,” she said. “But I think the application of the knowledge is what’s different than a lot of other mentorship programs.”
“I’ve come across a lot of other people’s programs. And, from what I can tell, there are meetings, but there isn’t a lot of feedback or direct application. Yes, I could gain knowledge elsewhere. But the difference comes from actually doing the work.”
“For example, going through seven versions of my bios… going back and forth, really drilling it home. That was a game-changer. I learned it, and I got it. But now I’m actually good at it. And I’m applying my knowledge, constantly.”
Natasha didn’t just build a business—she built belief in herself. I encourage you to connect with her on LinkedIn and check out her website/portfolio, to follow her journey and celebrate her continued success.
